The Wild Enneagram: Integrating Psychology, Spirituality, and Ecology

All-inclusive IN-PERSON retreat weekend at Rowe Camp & Conference Center!

“Psychology, so dedicated to awakening human consciousness, needs to wake itself up to one of the most ancient human truths: we cannot be studied or cured apart from the planet.”

~ Lester R. Brown in Ecopsychology, 1995

The Enneagram offers a powerful way to heal the split between psychology and spirituality, realms that tend to be kept separate in modern culture. Learning about the nine Types is really about learning to recognize when we are locked into the defensive posture of our ego (personality) versus when we are more Present, spiritually connected, and able to live from the Essential Gift that exists at the core of every Type.

However, while Enneagram teachings help us re-integrate psychology and spirituality, they rarely bring in the missing third: ecology. This reflects the false split between humans and the natural world that is so pervasive in Western cultures. We talk about “wild animals” as if human beings did not evolve in those same wild contexts and cyclical rhythms as other animals. We talk about “wilderness” as if it’s something out there, ignoring the inherent wildness of our own psycho-spiritual landscapes. This pervasive forgetting of our true nature has consequences, for ourselves and for the more-than-human world. The devastation of the “natural” world is one such consequence; our usually unspoken loneliness and despair is another.

Luckily, it is easier than we think to reconnect with our wildness, even in a modern context. One of the best ways is to invite nature to participate in our psychological and spiritual work, not as a mere backdrop, but as the actual source of transformation. To facilitate this, we will offer:

  • An introduction to the Enneagram for brand-new beginners

  • A fresh perspective on the Enneagram for more experienced students

  • Teachings on each type’s Spiritual Gift, Passion, Fixation, and Path of Transformation in the context of the more-than-human world

  • Inquiry exercises to personalize the material and connect with each other

  • Specific nature-based Enneagram practices to engage you with wild nature

We hope you will join us for this workshop, where we will magnify the wisdom and power of the Enneagram by honoring the reality that our human psychology and spirituality cannot be separated from the ecosystems in which we live.

Facilitated by a mother-son team of Riso-Hudson Certified Enneagram Teachers: Jenny Campbell and Ben Campbell.
